Willowbank Raceway catered for the ‘best and strongest racing at a Jamboree ever’, with some big records – including a world record – falling over the two days of the Castrol EDGE Jamboree.

With $30,000 of Event and Series prize money on the line as the weekend acted as the final round of the Toyo Tires Sport Compact Drag Racing Series, competitors came from all over to put down the quick passes.

“What a great weekend this Castrol EDGE Jamboree was, in its 18th year, I am sure this is the best and strongest field of racing we have ever seen at a Jamboree,” said Sport Compact Group Manager Ray Box.

“Nick Zervos from APC for one thrilled the fans, taking his Mitsubishi EVO II in the Super Mod class into the record books as the quickest four cyclinder All Wheel Drive Mitsubishi EVO in the world with a 8.077 second pass at 176.26mph.

“Not to be outdone, Rod Harvey from New Zealand and his Rayglass Boats sponsored Toyota Celica in McKern & Associates Pro Turbo was just one of the standouts, with the quickest pass of the event set at 6.736 seconds and 205.95mph after top qualifying.

“Also setting the pace was Anthony Rodrigues of Maztech who in Haltech Pro Compact ran a 7.361 second pass to top qualify, before pushing his Ford Cougar to a 7.162 second pass at 186.64 mph to make him the quickest Pro Compact and quickest two rotor outside of the USA and Puerto Rico.

“In fact, Rodrigues was only 0.192 seconds off beating the USA record as well, which is pretty amazing.”

Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes said the weekend had more than surpassed expectations.

“What an amazing lot of results we saw at Willowbank Raceway from the Castrol EDGE Jamboree,” said Bettes.

"The weekend's racing action has really acted as a great prequel for Willowbank Raceway ahead of the Spring Top Fuel Championships, which will see four of the top professional categories including Top Fuel hit the strip next month."

The Castrol EDGE Jamboree acted as a preliminary towards the first running of Willowbank Raceway’s new-for-2008 event, the Spring Top Fuel Championships, which will feature all of the Professional action from Top Fuel, Top Alcohol, Top Bike and Pro Stock.

The Spring Top Fuel Championships will kick off a new season for Queensland drag racing which will feature a bumper five major Professional Group One events, including the return of the International Nightfire New Year Series with two nitro spectaculars in January.
